Henry County was named for Patrick Henry, revolutionary leader and first governor of the commonwealth of Virginia. It was formed from Pittsylvania County in 1776. Wirt County was named for William Wirt, who gained fame in Virgtinia as a lawyer and perhaps is best known for his role in the prosecution of Aaron burr for treason.
